Megan Fearon's Political Journey
Starting in the Assembly
Megan Fearon was chosen by her party to take over from another politician, Conor Murphy. He had decided to leave the Assembly. This was part of Sinn Féin's plan to stop politicians from holding two big jobs at once.
When she was chosen, Megan had just finished her studies. She went to Queen's University Belfast. There, she earned a degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics.
Early Work and Advocacy
Before becoming an MLA, Megan was very active. She campaigned for Sinn Féin. She also worked to help people understand mental health and drug awareness. When she joined the Assembly, she became the youngest MLA.
Megan was part of important committees in the Assembly. These committees looked closely at how money was spent and how the economy was doing. She also worked with the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister.
Championing Equality
Megan Fearon strongly supported equality for everyone. She was especially passionate about LGBTQIA+ equality. She led the Northern Ireland Assembly Women's Caucus. This group works to support women in politics.
She also helped lead a group focused on UNSCR 1325. This resolution is about women, peace, and security around the world. Megan was also a member of groups that focused on children, young people, and fair trade.
Later Career and Stepping Down
Megan Fearon was re-elected in the Northern Ireland Assembly elections in both 2016 and 2017. In May 2016, she became a minister in the Northern Ireland Executive. This is like being a government leader.
In December 2019, Megan announced that she would be leaving her role as a Sinn Féin representative. She said she would still be an activist. However, her time as an elected politician was over.
