The Megunticook Golf Club is a private club located in Rockport, Maine. It features a special clubhouse and a nine-hole golf course. The club was started in 1899. This makes it one of the oldest recreational clubs in Maine. It is also home to the state's oldest private golf course that is still in use today. Its buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This means they are recognized as important historical places.

What is the Megunticook Golf Club?

The Megunticook Golf Club is found on the east side of the Beachamp Point area. This area is a piece of land that separates Rockport Harbor from Penobscot Bay. The club's property covers about 66 acres (27 ha). It has rolling hills and offers amazing views of the harbor and bay. The clubhouse is built on one of the highest points. This gives it the best views.

The clubhouse is a single-story building. It has a wide porch that wraps all the way around it. The foundation is made of rough stones. The outside walls are covered with stained wood shingles. Inside, the clubhouse has a reading room, a main club hall, and a ladies' parlor. It is located near the center of the nine-hole golf course. The golf course stretches west beyond Beachamp Street.

How Did the Club Start?

The Megunticook Golf Club was first organized in 1899. It officially became a company in 1901. The clubhouse was designed by Boston architect Charles Brigham. It opened in 1902, at the same time as the golf course.

The first plans for the golf course were made by George Ingraham. He was a local landscape contractor. The golf course you see today was mostly shaped by later designs. These designs were done in 1912 by Warren Manning. More work was done in 1915 by Albert Davis Taylor. Taylor had worked with Manning until 1914.
