Mel Stocker's Baseball Journey
Mel Stocker started his baseball career after attending Arizona State University. In 2001, he was chosen by the Kansas City Royals in the annual Major League Baseball Draft. This is where teams pick new players to join their organization.
Playing in the Minor Leagues
Mel spent five seasons playing in the Royals' minor league system. The minor leagues are like a training ground for baseball players. They help players get better before they can play in the Major Leagues. Mel played up to the Double-A level, which is one of the higher levels in the minor leagues.
In 2006, Mel played for a team called the Long Island Ducks. This team was part of the Atlantic League, which is not directly connected to Major League Baseball. While playing for the Ducks, Mel had a great season. He was known for his speed, stealing 56 bases! Stealing a base means running to the next base without the ball being hit, often surprising the other team.
Reaching the Major Leagues
After his time with the Ducks, Mel signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers for the 2007 season. He started the year playing for their Double-A team, the Huntsville Stars.
On September 1, 2007, Mel got his big chance! The Brewers called him up to play for their main Major League team. This was a huge step for him. A few weeks later, on September 14, 2007, he recorded his first stolen base in a Major League game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Later Career and Free Agency
In 2008, Mel started the season with the Brewers' Triple-A team, the Nashville Sounds. Triple-A is the highest level in the minor leagues, just below the Major Leagues. Later that year, he moved to another team, the Brevard County Manatees.
At the end of the 2008 season, Mel became a free agent. This means he was free to sign with any team he wanted. He then signed with the Seattle Mariners. In 2009, he played for their Double-A team, the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. After that season, he became a free agent again.
