Melanie's Musical Journey
Starting with Music
Melanie Horsnell started playing guitar when she was just five years old. She learned classical and flamenco styles. By age ten, she was already performing for people on Manly Beach. This is called busking.
Even though she loved music, Melanie first thought about managing a supermarket. But then, she won some songwriting competitions. This made her think more about a music career. She then spent a year in London, where she busked daily and improved her songwriting skills.
Becoming Known in Sydney
In 2000, Melanie started performing regularly at the Excelsior Hotel in Glebe, Sydney. She became a key part of Sydney's new folk music scene, sometimes called "NuFolk." She performed with many artists and also helped new musicians get started.
First Recordings and Big Breaks
In 2001, Melanie released her first collection of songs, called an EP, titled Don't Know What to Say. The next year, she released Magic Mirror. This EP was played on radios across Australia. Because of its success, she signed a deal with Shock Publishing.
Soon after, Melanie was asked to write songs for the popular children's TV show The Saddle Club. She also helped create the music for a film called Love in the First Degree.
Debut Album and European Success
Melanie began working on her first full album, The Adventures of..., in 2003. The first song from the album, "Birds," was played a lot on the Triple J radio station.
In 2004, she signed with Rounder Records in Europe. Her album The Adventures of... was released in many European countries in 2005. She even learned French to record a French version of her song "I Just Want Some Love." This helped her album become a featured album on French national radio. Melanie toured Europe four times and also performed in Singapore.
Her album The Adventures of... was finally released in Australia in September 2005. Melanie has also toured Australia many times. She often performs with her band, "the Inflatable Girlfriends." She has opened shows for famous artists like The Frames and Josh Pyke.
Music for TV and Collaborations
Melanie has sung for many TV commercials. These include ads for McHappy Day, Johnnie Walker, and Huggies. In 2007, she was the lead singer for the song "How Can It Be." This song was part of a side project called "Forever Thursday." It was used in a J.C. Penney advertisement shown during the 2007 Oscars.
New Albums and Tours
In 2008, Melanie recorded 12 new songs for her album Complicated Sweetheart. The first song released from this album was "Mary Mary." It was played on many radio stations, including Triple J.
Her album Cloud Appreciation Society came out in 2013. It features acoustic songs about small-town life and feelings. In 2017, Melanie went on a six-week tour in Europe. She toured with Steve Appel, also known as King Curly. They released a collaborative album together in 2018 called The World Has A Gentle Soul.
