Melchior Broederlam was an important early painter from the Netherlands. He was born around 1350 in Ypres and worked mostly for Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. He is known as one of the first Early Netherlandish painters whose works we can still see today. Even though only a few of his large paintings have survived, his work was very important for the history of Western art.

Life of Melchior Broederlam

Melchior Broederlam spent time in Italy early in his career. There, he learned new ways to show space and shapes in his paintings. This was influenced by Italian art from the 1300s.

From 1381, he became a court painter for Louis II of Flanders, who was the Duke of Brabant. A court painter is an artist who works directly for a ruler or royal family. After Louis's death in 1384, Broederlam worked for Philip the Bold, who was Louis's son-in-law and the new Duke.

Broederlam stayed in Ypres, but he did a lot of decorative work for Philip. He even helped paint the Duke's grand castle at Hesdin, which had many interesting mechanical devices. Like many artists who worked for royalty, he was given a special title called valet de chambre in 1387. This meant he was a trusted assistant to the Duke. In 1391, he was promoted to court painter. He continued to work for Philip's son, John the Fearless, but his name last appears in the Duke's records in 1409.

The Dijon Panels

Broederlam's most famous surviving works are two painted panels. These panels were the outside parts of a large carved altarpiece made by Jacques de Baerze. An altarpiece is a work of art, often a painting or sculpture, placed behind the altar in a church. Philip the Bold ordered this altarpiece for a monastery called Champmol near Dijon. Broederlam finished painting these panels in 1399. He also added gold and paint to the wood carvings inside the altarpiece.

Today, these panels are in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon. Another altarpiece from the same order is also there, which Broederlam gilded and painted. However, the outside panels he painted for that one are now lost. Back then, rules often meant that carving and painting were done by different artists from different guilds (groups of skilled workers).

Broederlam used oil paint in his work, which was quite new and had a big impact on later painters. Artists like Robert Campin and Jan van Eyck learned from his techniques. Both of Broederlam's panels show two different scenes. They feature wide landscapes and buildings that look like open pavilions, a style he learned from Italy.

Even though the way he showed perspective (making things look far away or close) was still developing, he was very good at using light and shadow. This made his paintings look deep and realistic. For example, his realistic painting of Saint Joseph became a common feature in later Netherlandish art. The skies in the Dijon panels are painted with gold, but a flying hawk in one scene shows they are meant to be real outdoor spaces. The buildings in the Annunciation painting mix old Romanesque and newer Gothic styles. This was probably a way to show the difference between the Old and New Testaments, a visual idea that Jan van Eyck would also use. Broederlam's panels show a lot of the popular International Gothic style of his time. But they also hint at a new, more natural way of painting that would become famous in the Netherlands.

Other Possible Works

Some other paintings have been thought to be by Broederlam or his workshop. However, art experts don't all agree on these. For example, six scenes from another altarpiece from Champmol are now split between museums in Antwerp and Baltimore. These have often been linked to Broederlam, but some details suggest they might be from a different art style called Mosan art.
