Who Was John W. Meldrum?

John W. Meldrum was born on September 17, 1843, and passed away on February 27, 1936. He served as the very first U.S. Commissioner in Yellowstone National Park. This role was like being a chief official or judge for the park. He helped manage the park and make sure its rules were followed.

Commissioner Meldrum held this important position for a very long time—41 years! He served from 1894 all the way until 1935. His dedication to Yellowstone National Park was recognized by naming this impressive mountain after him.
