Becoming a Writer
Melissa de la Cruz wrote her first full-length novel when she was 22. At that time, she was living in New York City and working at a bank. That first book didn't get published, but an editor suggested she try journalism to gain more writing experience.
She started working as a freelance writer and published her first essay in New York Press in 1996. She also worked as a beauty and fashion editor. In 1998, she sold her first published novel, The Cat's Meow. After her first book came out in 2001, she decided to become a full-time writer.
Her experience as a fashion writer for Marie Claire magazine helped inspire her book How to Become Famous in Two Weeks or Less (2003). She wrote this book with Karen Robinovitz.
Melissa de la Cruz also worked as a nanny and visited The Hamptons. These experiences became the background for her Au Pairs series, which started in 2004. She has also written original books for Disney's Descendants movies, with the first one published in 2015.
