Exploring Mellons Bay's Location
Mellons Bay sits on the eastern edge of East Auckland, right along the Hauraki Gulf coast. The suburb has two main ridges connected by a wide, steep valley that faces east. From the bay, you can look out towards the Tāmaki Strait and Waiheke Island. It's a great spot to enjoy the sea.
A Look at Mellons Bay's Past
The traditional name for Mellons Bay, given by the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Māori people, was Okokino. This name described the strong, tricky winds that made it hard for waka (Māori canoes) to travel along the coast.
European settlers started arriving in the area around 1847. This was when the Howick fencible settlement was set up. A "fencible settlement" was a place where retired British Army soldiers lived. Their job was to help protect Auckland from possible attacks.
Mellons Bay got its current name from an Irish settler named William Mellon, who moved there around 1856. More recently, in 2016, a special wall was built along the coast to help stop the land from being washed away by the sea.
