Melville is a small place in Foster County, North Dakota, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a settlement that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's managed by the county.

Discovering Melville

Melville is a quiet spot in the state of North Dakota. It's known for its location along important travel routes.

Where is Melville?

Melville is located in the central part of North Dakota. You can find it along two important roads: U.S. Route 52 and U.S. Route 281. These roads help people travel across the state. A railroad, the Red River Valley and Western Railroad, also passes through Melville. It is about 9 miles (14 kilometers) south-southeast of a larger town called Carrington.

How Melville Got Its Name

Melville wasn't always called Melville! When it was first established, it was named Newport. This name honored R. M. Newport, who was a treasurer for the Northern Pacific Railway. Later, the name was changed to Melville. This new name was chosen to honor Melville D. Carrington, who owned land in the area.
