Melvin Hunt, born on December 15, 1969, is an American basketball coach who has worked with many teams. He is currently an assistant coach for the Baylor Bears men's basketball team. Before joining Baylor, he was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Melvin Hunt's Journey in Basketball
Early Life and College Days
Melvin Hunt grew up in Tallulah, Louisiana. He attended Baylor University, where he earned degrees in business and education. While at Baylor, he was a dedicated basketball player for four years, from 1987 to 1991. He was a starter for three of those years. He helped his team reach important college tournaments like the NCAA and NIT. After college, Hunt continued his basketball career, playing professionally in the Caribbean and Mexico.
Starting His Coaching Path
Coach Hunt began his coaching journey at Temple High School in Texas as an assistant coach. He then moved to college basketball, becoming the lead assistant coach at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. These early experiences helped him learn the ropes of coaching.
Working in the NBA: From Scout to Coach
In 1999, Melvin Hunt joined the Houston Rockets. He spent five years with the team. At first, he worked as a scout, which meant he watched players and helped the team find new talent. Later, he became an assistant coach. After his time with the Rockets, he worked for the Los Angeles Lakers as an assistant coach for a year.
He then spent five successful years as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers. During this time, the Cavaliers had some of their best seasons ever. In the 2008–09 season, the team won an amazing 66 games, which was the best in the NBA that year. Coach Hunt and the coaching staff were even honored by coaching the Eastern Conference team in the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. The Cavaliers also made it to the 2007 NBA Finals and had many strong playoff runs.
After his time in Cleveland, Coach Hunt joined the Denver Nuggets in 2010 as an assistant coach. In March 2015, he stepped up to become the interim head coach for the Nuggets when the previous coach, Brian Shaw, left the team. His first game as interim head coach was a victory against the Milwaukee Bucks, with the Nuggets winning 106–95.
Later in 2015, he moved to the Dallas Mavericks to continue his work as an assistant coach. In 2018, he became an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks. Most recently, in 2024, Melvin Hunt returned to his alma mater, Baylor University, to serve as an assistant coach for the Baylor Bears men's basketball team.

Melvin Hunt is a family man. He and his wife have two children.
