Melvin Hunt, born on December 15, 1969, is an American basketball coach. He currently works as an assistant coach for the Baylor Bears college team. Before this, he was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Melvin Hunt's Early Life
Melvin Hunt grew up in Tallulah, Louisiana. He went to Baylor University and studied business and education. While at Baylor, he played basketball for four years, from 1987 to 1991. He was a key player for the team and helped them reach both the NCAA and NIT tournaments. After college, Hunt played professional basketball in the Caribbean and Mexico.
Coaching Career
Starting as an Assistant Coach
Hunt started his coaching journey as an assistant coach at Temple High School in Texas. After that, he moved to college basketball, becoming the main assistant coach at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
Time with NBA Teams
In 1999, Hunt joined the Houston Rockets. He spent five years there, first as a video coordinator and scout. This meant he helped the team by watching game videos and finding new players. Later, he became an assistant coach. His last year with the Rockets, he focused on scouting college and international players.
After the Rockets, he spent one year as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers. Then, he joined the Cleveland Cavaliers as an assistant coach for five years. During his time with the Cavaliers, the team had some of its best seasons ever. In the 2008–09 season, the Cavaliers won 66 games, which was the most in the NBA that year. Hunt and the coaching staff were even chosen to coach the Eastern Conference team in the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. The Cavaliers also did very well in the playoffs, reaching the 2007 NBA Finals and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2009.
In 2010, Hunt signed with the Denver Nuggets, where he worked as an assistant coach for several years.
Becoming an Interim Head Coach
On March 3, 2015, Melvin Hunt was named the interim head coach for the Denver Nuggets. This happened after the previous coach, Brian Shaw, left the team. Hunt made his debut as head coach on March 3, 2015, leading the Nuggets to a 106–95 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Later Coaching Roles
After his time with the Nuggets, Hunt joined the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach on June 30, 2015. He stayed with them until 2017.
On June 8, 2018, Hunt was hired by the Atlanta Hawks as an assistant coach. He worked with the Hawks until 2020. In 2024, he returned to his college roots, becoming an assistant coach for the Baylor Bears once again.
