History of Memphis, Indiana
Memphis, Indiana, got its start a long time ago. A post office was opened here in 1854. The first people who settled in Memphis came from a city with the same name, Memphis, Tennessee.
The 2012 Tornado Outbreak
On March 2, 2012, a powerful tornado struck the area. This tornado passed between Henryville and Memphis. It caused damage to 15 homes on Broadway street. Other homes on Stricker Road were also damaged. After the tornado, many people came to help. Volunteers traveled from places as far away as Germany and Singapore to assist the community.
