The Memphis Daily Post was an important newspaper in Memphis, Tennessee. It was published every day and focused on the lives of freed people. These were people who had been enslaved and were now free after the American Civil War. The newspaper helped share their stories and ideas.

History of the Newspaper

The Memphis Daily Post started in January 1866. It was founded by John Eaton. He had worked to help formerly enslaved people after the Civil War. John Eaton was the main editor, and his brother Lucian helped him.

Why the Paper Started

The newspaper supported equal rights for all people. Because of this, it was hard for the paper to get a lot of money from advertisements. Many of its readers were also not wealthy. This meant the newspaper could not make enough money to keep going. It stopped publishing after about four years.

Changing Names Over Time

During its four years, the newspaper changed its name several times.

  • From January 15 to February 10, 1866, it was called the Memphis Morning Post.
  • From February 11 to February 25, 1866, it was the Memphis Post.
  • For most of its time, from February 27, 1866, to April 25, 1868, it was the Memphis Daily Post.
  • Finally, from April 27, 1868, until it closed on September 11, 1869, it was known as the Memphis Evening Post.

What the Paper Believed In

The newspaper was moderately Republican. This meant it generally supported the ideas of the Republican Party at that time. A big focus for the paper was equality for everyone. It even supported the Alaska Purchase. The paper believed buying Alaska would help the United States grow its trade in the Pacific Ocean.

The Weekly Edition

Besides the daily paper, John Eaton also published a weekly version. This paper was called the Memphis Weekly Post. It was published from February 17, 1866, to December 23, 1869.
