Menceyato of Taoro facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Taoro was one of nine Guanche menceyatos (native kingdoms) on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. This was how the island was divided when Spanish explorers first arrived.

Taoro was known as the most powerful native kingdom on Tenerife. It covered a large area, including places we now call Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, La Victoria de Acentejo, La Matanza de Acentejo, Los Realejos, and Santa Úrsula.

Who Were the Guanches?

The Guanches were the original people who lived on the Canary Islands before Europeans arrived. They were an amazing group of people with their own unique culture, language, and way of life. They lived in caves or simple stone houses and were skilled farmers and herders.

Each island had its own groups, and Tenerife had nine main kingdoms, called menceyatos. Each menceyato was ruled by a leader called a mencey.

The Kingdom of Taoro

Taoro was not just the biggest menceyato; it was also the most important. It was located in the northern part of Tenerife, which had fertile lands and good resources. This made it a strong and wealthy kingdom compared to the others.

The people of Taoro were known for being brave and strong. They had a well-organized society and were ready to defend their land.

Location and Importance

The lands of Taoro stretched across some of the most beautiful and productive areas of Tenerife. The rich soil and good climate allowed the Guanches to grow crops and raise animals. This helped their kingdom become very powerful.

Because of its strength, Taoro often led the other Guanche kingdoms when there was a big decision to make or a threat to face.

The Mencey Bencomo

The most famous leader of Taoro was Bencomo. He was a very respected and powerful mencey. Bencomo was known for his wisdom and his courage. He united several of the other Guanche kingdoms to resist the Spanish invaders.

Bencomo played a key role in the defense of Tenerife. He led his people with great bravery during the battles against the Castilian (Spanish) forces. His leadership made him a legendary figure in the history of the Canary Islands.

The Spanish Conquest

In the late 1400s, the Spanish began to conquer the Canary Islands. Tenerife was one of the last islands to be taken. The people of Taoro, led by Bencomo, were determined to protect their homeland.

The Spanish, led by Alonso Fernández de Lugo, faced strong resistance. The Guanches, even though they had simpler weapons, fought fiercely. They knew their land well and used it to their advantage.

Major Battles

One of the most famous battles was the First Battle of Acentejo in 1494. In this battle, the Guanches, under Bencomo's command, surprised the Spanish forces and won a great victory. Many Spanish soldiers were killed, and the invaders had to retreat.

However, the Spanish returned with more soldiers and better weapons. In a later battle, the Battle of Aguere, Bencomo was sadly killed. His death was a huge loss for the Guanches.

After the Conquest

After Bencomo's death and further battles, the Spanish eventually conquered Taoro and the rest of Tenerife. This marked the end of the independent Guanche kingdoms. The island became part of the Crown of Castile.

The Guanche people slowly mixed with the new settlers. Their culture and language changed over time, but their legacy lives on in the history and traditions of the Canary Islands. The story of Taoro and its brave leaders like Bencomo reminds us of the rich past of Tenerife.
