Merbai Ardesir Vakil was a pioneering Indian doctor. She was born on May 25, 1868, and passed away on April 9, 1941. Merbai Vakil made history as the first Asian woman to graduate from a university in Scotland. She was a Parsi physician who worked hard to help many people.

Her Early Years

Merbai Ardesir Vakil was born in Bombay (now called Mumbai) on May 25, 1868. Her father, Ardesir Framji Vakil, was a Parsi lawyer.

She went to Wilson High School in Bombay. After that, she attended Wilson College in Bombay. In 1888, she became the first woman to graduate from Wilson College.

Becoming a Doctor

After her first graduation, Merbai Vakil studied at Grant Medical College in Bombay. She then moved to London to study at the London School of Medicine for Women.

In 1893, she moved to Glasgow, Scotland. There, she studied at Queen Margaret College. On July 22, 1897, she earned her medical degree (MB ChB). This made her the first Asian woman to graduate from a Scottish university. She then spent two more years in Glasgow doing advanced medical training.

Her Medical Work

After finishing her studies, Merbai Vakil returned to India. She worked at several hospitals and clinics. She helped patients at the Cama Hospital for Women and Children in Bombay. She also worked at the Plague Hospital in Byculla, Bombay.

Merbai Vakil also helped people at the Cumoo Jaffer Suleman Dispensary in Kapadoiaas. She worked in other hospitals and dispensaries too. In March 1941, she moved to Aden. There, she first worked for the British government. Later, she started her own private medical practice.

Later Life and Death

Merbai Vakil's health became poor. In March 1941, she returned to Bombay. She passed away on April 9, 1941, at the age of 72.
