The Clarkia lingulata, also known as the Merced clarkia, is a very rare wild flower. This plant is only found in Mariposa County, California. It grows in just two spots near the Merced River.
Scientists believe this plant evolved very quickly from its parent species, Clarkia biloba. It is considered an endangered species in California, meaning it is protected by law.
What Does It Look Like?
The Merced clarkia has a thin stem. It usually grows less than 0.5 meters (about 1.5 feet) tall. This plant also has a few narrow leaves.
Its flowers are shaped like saucers and are bright pink. Each flower has four spoon-shaped petals, about 1 to 2 centimeters long. Sometimes, these petals have small red spots. Inside the flower, there are eight parts called stamens, which have lavender tips.
