Julius W. "Jimmy" Mullins (born March 12, 1930 – died September 10, 1977) was an American musician. He was known by his stage name, Mercy Baby. He played the drums, sang, and wrote songs. He recorded blues and rhythm and blues music in the late 1950s.

The Life of Mercy Baby

Julius Mullins was born near Rawls Springs, Mississippi. His parents were Jessie and Jeff Mullins. His father worked as a nightwatchman. Around 1948, Jimmy moved to Dallas, Texas.

Starting His Music Career

He started his music career as a drummer. His first recording was in 1957. He played drums for guitarist and singer Frankie Lee Sims. Their song was "What Will Lucy Do?". It was released by Ace Records. He continued to perform with Sims' band. They recorded together until at least 1960.

Recording as Mercy Baby

Using the name Mercy Baby, he released his own songs. In 1957, he put out two singles on the Ace label. These were "Marked Deck" and "Silly Dilly Woman". Frankie Lee Sims played guitar on both of these songs.

In 1958, he released another single called "Pleadin'". This song came out on the Ric label.

Live Performances

Mercy Baby also performed live. In November 1957, he played with Frankie Lee Sims. They were part of Al Benson's rock and roll show in Chicago. Other famous musicians were there too. These included Big Maybelle, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and The Dells.

His Own Record Label

Mercy Baby later released music on his own record label. This label was based in Dallas. His last recordings were "Love's Voodoo" in 1958 and "The Rock and Stomp" in 1959.

Later Life

Julius Mullins was married. Later in his life, he worked in property maintenance. He passed away in Dallas at the age of 47. He was buried in Carver Memorial Park.
