History of Mercy Medical Center
Building a New Hospital
In the 1980s, a girl named Lia Lee was treated at this hospital. Her story was later told in a book called The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.
In 2001, the State of California told hospitals they needed to follow new rules. These rules were about making sure hospitals could stay safe during earthquakes. The hospital decided to build a brand new building. This new hospital opened on May 2, 2010. Before it opened, a group called the Mercy Medical Center Foundation worked to raise $5 million. This money was used to buy important medical equipment for the new hospital.
Patient Care Ratings
In 2010, a magazine called Consumer Reports looked at hospitals across the United States. They gave Mercy Medical Center Merced a patient rating of 49 out of 100. The hospital later said that its own patient satisfaction surveys showed higher results.
Hospital Facilities
The New Hospital Building
The current Mercy Medical Center is located on North G Street in northern Merced. It was planned to open in August 2010. The first part of this new hospital cost $262 million to build. It can hold up to 186 patients at one time. The hospital plans to grow over the next 20 years. Eventually, it hopes to have space for 435 patients. The new hospital has 27 rooms for examinations. Most of the rooms where patients stay are private, meaning one patient per room.
The Old Hospital Building
The hospital used to be in an older building on 13th Street. This old building could hold 174 patients. By 2009, the old hospital was more than 50 years old. It had 17 examination rooms. Unlike the new building, the old hospital had very few private rooms for patients.
