Mere Green, Birmingham facts for kids
Mere Green is a busy area with shops and restaurants located in Four Oaks, part of Sutton Coldfield, England. It's a place where people can find many different things to do and buy.
What You Can Find in Mere Green
Mere Green has a mix of local shops and bigger national stores. You can find supermarkets like Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury's, and Lidl here. There are also several places to eat and drink, including the Mare Pool, Renato Lounge, Old School House, and the Fox and Dogs.
The Mere Green Library and Community Centre is a great place for learning and fun. It offers classes like yoga and art. You can also use free internet access there. For sports, there are facilities for tennis and lawn green bowls. The centre also hosts reading groups for both kids and adults, and sometimes has special exhibitions.
In 1983, Mere Green became famous because of a local restaurant owner. Renato Pagliari, who co-owned the La Gondola restaurant, had a number one hit song in the UK. He was part of a singing duo called 'Renée and Renato', and their song was 'Save Your Love'.
Mere Green's Development
Years ago, there were plans to make the Mere Green shopping area even better. This project, called "Mulberry Walk," involved building new shops and spaces. The plans were approved in 2007. However, the project was delayed for a while because of economic problems.
Work on the £15 million "Mulberry Walk" project finally began in September 2015. The first new store to open was Boots in August 2016. Another store, Warrens Bakery, opened in February 2017. This was their first store outside of the West Country, but it later closed in 2019.
