Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods is a large park located in downtown Columbia, Maryland. It's a great place for people to gather and enjoy nature.

The park is home to a special outdoor stage called The Chrysalis. This stage was built in 2016 and has a big lawn where people can sit. The Chrysalis hosts many fun events. You can see music concerts, ballet shows, plays, and community gatherings like the Maker Faire here.

The Park's Story

The idea for Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods began in 2013. Michael McCall, who used to work for the Rouse Company, suggested a plan. He wanted to turn the wooded area into a special park for everyone to enjoy.

His company, Strategic Leisure, helped create the vision for the park. They imagined a 39-acre arts park. It would have unique features, including The Chrysalis amphitheater. Other ideas included a very long floating picnic table and a tube-like structure called the Caterpillar.

This new project was given the name "Inner Arbor." It was a nod to another famous development, Baltimore's "Inner Harbor." An artist from Howard County, William Cochran, was asked to create artwork for the park. His art includes large horn-shaped sculptures, some as tall as 28 feet!

The Chrysalis officially opened its doors for performances in 2017. Since then, it has been a popular spot for entertainment and community events.
