Mersin Province is a province in southern Turkey. It is located on the Mediterranean coast, between the cities of Antalya and Adana.
About the Name
Mersin Province used to be called İçel. Its name was changed to Mersin in 2002. Even though the name changed, it kept its original license plate number, which is 33. This is because İçel was the 33rd province in alphabetical order in Turkey.
Geography and People
Most of Mersin Province is covered by mountains, about 87% of the land!
Many young people live here. About half of the people in the province are younger than 24 years old. Also, most of the people, around 68%, were born right there in Mersin. Most adults in Mersin can read and write, with a literacy rate of 89%.

Mersin Province is divided into thirteen smaller areas called districts. Four of these districts are actually part of the main Mersin city itself.
