Setting a World Record

In 2004, Meskerem achieved a major milestone. She set a world junior record for the indoor 800-meter race. This happened in Fayetteville, United States, on February 14, 2004. Her amazing time was 2 minutes and 1.03 seconds.

Competing at the Olympics

Meskerem Legesse represented her country, Ethiopia, at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. She competed in the 1,500-meter race. Although she ran a time of 4 minutes and 18.03 seconds in her first race, she did not move on to the final medal round. Still, competing in the Olympics is a huge achievement for any athlete.

Life in the United States

Meskerem lived in Westport, Connecticut, in the United States. She had moved there from Ethiopia in 2004 and had lived there for nine years. Later in her life, she stopped running professionally. This was due to a health condition that affected her heart.

A Sad Farewell

Meskerem Legesse passed away suddenly on July 15, 2013. She was in Hamden, Connecticut, at a restaurant with her two-year-old son when she became unwell. She was expecting another child and was just three weeks away from giving birth. Doctors were able to save her unborn baby, who was born safely.
