Mesud I, also known as Rukn al-Din Mesud, was an important ruler of the Sultanate of Rum. He was the Sultan from 1116 until he died in 1156. The Sultanate of Rum was a powerful Turkish state in what is now Turkey.

Mesud I's Rule

Mesud I became Sultan of Rum in 1116. His father, Kilij Arslan I, had died in battle in 1107. After his father's death, Mesud's brother, Malik Shah, took the throne.

With help from the Danishmends, Mesud took control of Konya. He defeated Malik Shah in 1116 and became the new Sultan. Later, Mesud also took some lands from the Danishmends. In 1130, he started building the Alâeddin Mosque in Konya. This important mosque was finished much later, in 1221.

Battles and Victories

In 1146, Mesud successfully defended his capital city, Konya. The Byzantine Empire had attacked it, but Mesud's forces pushed them back.

Towards the end of his rule, Mesud faced armies from the Second Crusade. One army was led by Emperor Conrad III of Germany. The other was led by King Louis VII of France. Mesud defeated both of these large armies. He won the first battle in 1147 near modern Eskişehir. He defeated the second army in 1148 near modern Denizli.

Conflict with Thoros II

Emperor Manuel I Komnenos of the Byzantine Empire wanted Mesud I to attack Thoros II. Thoros was an Armenian ruler. The Emperor wanted Thoros to accept Mesud as his overlord.

In 1154, the Seljuk army attacked. This attack happened after Armenians raided Seljuk lands. However, Thoros and a group of Knights Templar successfully fought them off. The Seljuk army was defeated without a major battle. Many of their horses became sick, and the soldiers had to flee on foot.

When Mesud I died in 1156, his son Kilij Arslan II became the next Sultan. One of Mesud's daughters married John Tzelepes Komnenos. He was a member of the royal Komnenos family who had converted to Islam.
