Early Life and Education
Mesut Kurtis was born in Skopje, which is now the capital of North Macedonia. His parents were Turkish. From a young age, he showed a great interest in Islamic nasheeds, which are songs often sung without musical instruments or with light percussion.
He studied at the College of Skopje. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom to continue his education. He earned a degree in Human Sciences, focusing on Islamic Law and Jurisprudence, from the European Institute of Human Sciences at the University of Wales. Mesut Kurtis comes from a family where learning and religion were important. Both his father and grandfather were fluent in Classical Arabic.
Music Career and Style
Mesut Kurtis was very interested in Islamic nasheeds from a young age. He joined several nasheed groups in Macedonia. These groups performed locally and also traveled to other countries, including Turkey. His music is a mix of different styles. It includes influences from Sufi music, Turkish classical music, Arabic music, and European music.
In May 2004, Mesut Kurtis released his first album, called Salawat. Awakening Records produced this album. It featured songs that combined Arabic, Turkish, and English languages. The album became very popular with Muslim listeners around the world. This was especially true after his first music video, "Al-Burdah," was released. The video was filmed on islands off the coast of Turkey.
His second album, Beloved, came out in June 2009. Then, in July 2014, his third album, Tabassam, was released. Mesut Kurtis sings in several languages, including Arabic, English, Macedonian, and Turkish. He is also fluent in five different languages.
Helping Others Through Music
Mesut Kurtis uses his music to help people in need. He has taken part in many charity events.
- In April 2012, he joined a charity concert called "Send A Little Hope." This event was organized by Awakening Records and the Save An Orphan organization. It took place in London and aimed to raise money and awareness for orphans. Over £175,000 was promised during that night.
- Later in April 2012, Mesut Kurtis performed at a charity concert in Sharjah City. This concert helped introduce young people to issues faced by those with disabilities. It also highlighted the importance of volunteering.
- In 2014, Kurtis participated in the "Sound of Light" tour. This tour was organized by Awakening Records and Human Appeal International. It took place in France and the UK to collect money for people in Gaza. One concert in Bradford, England, raised £520,000.
