About Metlako Falls
Metlako Falls is special because it is a "punchbowl" type waterfall. This means the water falls into a deep, round pool, just like a punchbowl! The falls are about 31 meters (101 ft) tall. That's like a 10-story building! Some people have measured it to be even taller, up to 46 m (150 ft).
This waterfall is also very important for salmon. It is the furthest point upstream that salmon can swim to lay their eggs. This makes Metlako Falls a vital spot for these amazing fish.
How Metlako Falls Got Its Name
The name "Metlako" was given to the waterfall in 1915. A group called the Mazamas discovered and named it. They chose the name Metlako after an Indian goddess of salmon. This name was chosen because the waterfall is where salmon stop their journey to lay eggs. It's a perfect name for such an important place for salmon!
