What is the History of Metquarter?
The building where Metquarter stands today has a long history. It used to be Liverpool's main General Post Office. This old building looked a bit like a French castle!
From Post Office to Shopping Centre
Sadly, the building was badly damaged during the Liverpool Blitz in May 1941. This was a time when many bombs fell on Liverpool during World War II. The top parts of the building had to be taken down because of the damage.
Later, in 2004, some companies bought the site. They decided to turn the old Post Office into a modern shopping and fun centre. It cost a lot of money, about £100 million, to change the building.
Metquarter finally opened its doors in March 2006. It quickly became a popular spot for shopping. In 2007, new owners took over, but it still stayed a great place to visit.
Future Plans for Metquarter
In 2020, there were plans to use the upper floors of Metquarter for something new. They wanted to create teaching rooms, recording studios, and common areas for students. These would be for students from the Liverpool Media Academy.
What Shops and Services Can You Find at Metquarter?
Metquarter is located on Whitechapel, a street in Liverpool city centre. It has around 40 different shops and places to eat. It's one of the biggest shopping centres in Liverpool. Only Liverpool One and St. John's Shopping Centre are larger.
Popular Brands and More
Metquarter is famous for its high-end shops. Some of the well-known brands you can find there include Jack Wills, Jo Malone, Hugo Boss, and Kurt Geiger. It's often called the 'Bond Street of Liverpool' because it has so many luxury stores.
