Liverpool ONE is a huge shopping, living, and fun area in Liverpool, England. It was built on 42 acres (170,000 m2) of land right in the city centre.

This amazing place has many shops, including big department stores like Debenhams and John Lewis. But it's not just for shopping! You can also find cool things to do, like a 14-screen Odeon cinema and a 36-hole mini golf course. There are also apartments, offices, parks, restaurants, and better transport links.

Building Liverpool ONE really helped the city's economy. It made Liverpool one of the top five best places to shop in the UK!

Liverpool ONE is the largest open-air shopping centre in the UK. It is also the ninth-largest shopping centre overall. Each building was designed by a different architect. This means the buildings look very different from each other, which makes Liverpool ONE special. Most of the area opened in stages during 2008. This was when Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture. The last homes opened in early 2009. The whole project cost £500 million to build.

Building Liverpool ONE

Different materials were used to build Liverpool ONE

Work on Liverpool ONE started in Spring 2004. The first step was to dig up Chavasse Park. Building began in Autumn of the same year.

Before construction, people looked for old things buried underground. This is called archaeology. Chavasse Park was built over old buildings destroyed in World War II. Also, a car park was on the site of the Old Dock. This was the world's first ever wet dock for ships.

The first parts of Liverpool ONE to be finished were a multi-storey car park and a bus station. These opened in November 2005. This allowed an old bus station and car park to be knocked down in January 2006. This made space for new buildings on Paradise Street.

In July 2006, a hairdresser called Herbert's was the first business to move into a new building. It was in his special "Bling Bling Building" on Hanover Street. At the same time, BBC Radio Merseyside moved to Hanover Street too. This allowed more old buildings on Paradise Street to be knocked down. In August 2006, a special ceremony called "Topping out" was held. This was for the top floor of the John Lewis store.

In March 2007, the main underground car park was finished. Then, work started on rebuilding Chavasse Park. They used polystyrene blocks to make the park higher.

Shops and Services

Liverpool ONE has about 170 shops and services. This makes it the biggest shopping centre in Liverpool. It is also the second largest in North West England.

Liverpool ONE has two main department stores: Debenhams and John Lewis. It also has the UK's first Pull & Bear store. In Summer 2009, the biggest Topman/Topshop store outside London opened here.

ODEON Cinema

The Odeon Liverpool ONE cinema opened on 1 October 2008. It moved from its old location on London Road. The new cinema is inside Liverpool ONE on South John Street. It has 14 screens and over 3,000 seats. This makes it the biggest cinema in Liverpool.

Hotels

Liverpool ONE has two large hotels. The Hilton Liverpool has 215 rooms and is near Chavasse Park. It has meeting rooms, a restaurant, and a bar. The 12-storey Novotel on Hanover Street was built between 2007 and 2009. It has 209 rooms, a gym, a swimming pool, and a restaurant. There are also BridgeStreet serviced apartments.

Six Districts of Liverpool ONE

In November 2005, the developers named the new area Liverpool ONE. It is made up of six different areas, each with shops, fun places, and homes.

Hanover Street

This area has a relaxed feel. It uses old buildings, some of which were empty before. Here you can find shops for home goods and street markets.

Peter's Lane

This district has fashion shops on arcades, streets, and squares. It connects the older Church Street area to the new part of Liverpool ONE. Shops on Peter's Lane include Ted Baker, Fat Face, and Karen Millen. The entrance to this area is near Starbucks and John Lewis. Another arcade called "Keys Court" links this area to Church Street. Along Keys Court, you can find shops like Topshop (the largest outside London).

In October 2011, Harvey Nichols opened a special pop-up shop here for a short time. Later, a French fashion brand called The Kooples opened its third store outside London in this spot.

New Manesty's Lane

This area was planned for a big department store. Instead, it was split into two parts. One part is now the flagship Flannels store. The other part is the first stand-alone Ermenegildo Zegna store outside London. This Flannels store feels more like a department store. Other shops here include Onitsuka Tiger and Fred Perry.

In January 2012, Harvey Nichols opened its "Beauty Bazaar" store here. It was the first of its kind in the UK outside Birmingham.

Paradise Street

This is a wide street just for people walking. It has many flagship stores. You can find John Lewis, Pret a Manger, EE, Nike, JD Sports, Apple Store, Starbucks, Waterstones, and Urban Outfitters here.

South John Street

This is the main part of the new shopping area. It has two levels of high-street shops. It also connects to the park. The big stores, John Lewis and Debenhams, are at each end. Many popular shops are on South John Street, such as Adidas, AllSaints, The Body Shop, Disney Store, Game, Gap, HMV, Hollister Co., Mango, Pull and Bear, SportsDirect.com, Vodafone, and Zara.

Both Liverpool Football Club and Everton Football Club have club shops on South John Street. Everton's shop is even called 'Everton Two'. This makes its address "Everton Two, Liverpool ONE", which sounds like a football score!

The 'Leisure Level' of South John Street has the Odeon cinema. It also has many restaurants. You can find places like Barburrito (Mexican), Café Rouge (French), Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Burgers), Las Iguanas (Latin American), Nando's (Portuguese/African), PizzaExpress (Italian), Pizza Hut (Italian), Wagamama (Japanese), and Yo! Sushi (Japanese).

The Park

This is a rebuilt Chavasse Park. It rises in levels from Strand Street to pavilions high above South John Street. This is where the Odeon cinema is, along with many restaurants. Underneath the park is a huge underground car park with 3,000 spaces. The park is named after the Chavasse family. This includes Noel Chavasse, a local war hero. He was one of only three people to win the Victoria Cross and a Bar.

Point of Arrival

This area includes a bus station and a multi-storey car park. It is at the edge of the main shopping district.

The new Liverpool ONE Bus Station opened in November 2005. It replaced the old Paradise Street Bus Station. This was one of the first parts of the Liverpool ONE project. It is a main entry point to the shopping centre. The bus station has ten bus stops. Each stop can handle up to 20 buses an hour. It serves ten million people every year.
