The Story of Hollister Co.
How Hollister Started
The very first Hollister store opened on July 27, 2000. It was located in Columbus, Ohio, at the Easton Town Center. After that, four more test stores opened in different cities. These included Overland Park, Kansas, Buford, Georgia, Canoga Park, California, and Paramus, New Jersey.
Even though Hollister Co. started in 2000, its parent company, Abercrombie & Fitch, created a fun, fictional story about its beginnings. This story said that a person named John Hollister, Sr. traveled from New York City to the Dutch East Indies. The story claimed he started the company in California in 1922 after returning to the United States. However, the real company began in Ohio in 2000. A spokesperson for Abercrombie & Fitch once said that Hollister was not just for surfers. Instead, it was about a cool, relaxed lifestyle.
Hollister Around the World
Hollister Co. started to open stores in Canada in early 2006. The first Canadian stores opened in Toronto, Ontario.
Around 2007, Hollister stores in the U.S. began to add large video walls. These screens showed live videos from Surf City Huntington Beach, California. Hollister even paid the city for cameras on the Huntington Beach Pier. By late 2007, some Hollister stores also started to promote another brand called Gilly Hicks. They did this by selling body care items like sprays and lotions.
In October 2008, Hollister Co. opened its first store outside North America. This store was in Brent Cross, London, in the United Kingdom. More stores soon opened in the UK. After that, Hollister expanded to other countries like Italy, Germany, China, Japan, and Spain. In 2011, the first Hollister store in Dublin, Ireland, opened in the Dundrum Town Centre.
In 2009, Hollister launched a big marketing campaign for its first "flagship" store. This campaign called it "The Epic Hollister Store." They created a website with postcards, wallpapers, and a video. It even had a countdown timer until the store opened.
Hollister Store Designs

When Hollister Co. first started, its stores were designed to look like old beach shacks. They had windows with shutters and walls with light and dark brown patterns. A teal boardwalk with steps led to the entrance. The inside of the store was often hidden from view. This beach shack style was a unique idea that Abercrombie & Fitch also used for its own stores later.
Later, Hollister stores began to get a new look. This new design included front windows and removed the old beach shack entrance. The new stores were smaller but had more space for clothes. Many of the older stores were updated, and new stores were built with this fresh design.
Over time, Hollister stores also changed their inside atmosphere. They used to be quite dark with loud music. To make shopping more comfortable, they started turning on the ceiling lights and playing music at a lower volume.
The Flagship Store in New York
On July 16, 2009, Hollister opened its first very large "flagship" store. This special store was located in SoHo, New York City, on Broadway. It had four floors and a huge retail space. A company representative said the store showed what Hollister was all about: "big waves, surf, sun, and hanging out on the pier." The store aimed to bring the relaxed California lifestyle to New York. The Hollister flagship store in SoHo closed in 2019.
