The 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang was Mexico's fifth time competing. Their first time was at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Turin, Italy. Mexico's strongest winter sport has always been para-alpine skiing.

About Para-alpine Skiing

The Skier: Arly Velásquez

Arly Velásquez competed in his third Paralympics in Pyeongchang. He also went to the 2010 Games and the 2014 Games. He had a big accident during the 2014 Games. To get ready for the 2018 Games, Velásquez lived in Europe for six months. He started para-alpine skiing in 2008.

Velásquez was born in Cancun, Mexico. When he was a child, he moved to the United States. At 12 years old, he had a mountain biking accident. This accident meant he could no longer use his legs. Even after his accident, he still loves to cycle. Velásquez has even represented Mexico in cycling competitions around the world.

Skiing Events Schedule

Para-alpine skiing events at the 2018 Games started on March 10. The first event was the downhill race. Skiers competed from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

The Super-G event took place on March 11. All skiers raced between 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM.

The super combined event was on March 13. This event has two parts: the Super-G in the morning and the slalom in the afternoon.

The slalom event happened on March 14 and 15. Both women and men raced during the morning sessions. In the afternoon, women did their second run first, followed by the men.

The last para-alpine skiing race was the giant slalom. It took place on March 17 and 18. Men and women raced at the same time in the morning sessions. In the afternoon, women raced first, and then the men raced about 30 minutes later.
