Mhoon Landing is a small, unincorporated community in Tunica County, Mississippi, United States. It is located right on the Mississippi River. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's about 6 miles (9.7 km) northwest of North Tunica.

History of Mhoon Landing

This area was named in 1859 after Feyton Mhoon. He was an African-American settler known as "Faithful." Each night, Feyton would take his wagon to Rabbit Island, which was north of Mhoon Landing. He would place a lantern in the lighthouse there. This light helped river boats see their way.

River Trade and Flooding

Goods, called commodities, were moved by large boats called barges. These barges traveled to and from Rabbit Island. Feyton Mhoon would then transport these goods to the market in Austin. This helped trade along the river.

During the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, Mhoon Landing became a very important place. It served as a headquarters for the Red Cross. This organization helped people affected by the flood.

The land around Mhoon Landing was not often used for farming. This was because it was very close to the Mississippi River. There was a high risk of flooding, which could ruin crops. Because of this, the land was quite inexpensive in the early 1990s.

Casinos and Entertainment

In 1992, the first casino in Northern Mississippi opened in Mhoon Landing. It was called "Splash." This casino was very popular. People sometimes waited in line for up to three hours to get in. They even paid a $10 fee to enter.

Growth and Changes in Casinos

Because Splash was so successful, three more casinos opened within a year. These were "Lady Luck," "President," and "Bally's." They were on ships docked at Mhoon Landing.

However, things changed quickly. By 1995, Splash had closed down. President and Bally's moved closer to Memphis. Lady Luck casino also left Mhoon Landing in April 1994. It moved south to a spot near the U.S. Route 49 highway crossing.

Larger casinos in Tunica Resorts soon became more popular. They took over the market. In 2004, a company tried to open a new casino called "Splash Back Casino." They brought a ship called the SS Nantucket from Biloxi. But the ship ended up stuck in a spot with almost no water. It was taken apart in 2012.
