Michael Ammermüller (born February 14, 1986) is a German racing driver. He is famous for winning the Porsche Supercup championship three years in a row.

Ammermüller started his career in junior racing series. He quickly showed his talent and moved up the ranks. In 2007, he became a test and reserve driver for the Red Bull Racing Formula One team. This meant he helped the team develop their car and was ready to race if one of the main drivers couldn't.

After his time in Formula One, he raced for A1 Team Germany in the A1 Grand Prix series. Later, he found great success in sports car racing. He joined the Porsche Supercup in 2012 and became a champion in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Early Racing Career

Michael Ammermüller began his professional racing journey in 2004. He competed in two different Formula Renault series, which are important stepping stones for young drivers. By 2006, he had advanced to the GP2 Series (now known as the FIA Formula 2 Championship), racing for the Arden International team. The GP2 series is often the last step before a driver reaches Formula One.

A Chance in Formula One

Ammermüller was part of the Red Bull Junior Team, a program that helps talented young drivers. In 2006, an opportunity opened up at the Red Bull Racing Formula One team. One of their drivers was replaced, and the team's third driver was promoted to a race seat.

This created a vacancy, and Ammermüller was chosen to be the new third driver for the last three races of the season. As a third driver, his job was to participate in practice sessions on Fridays before the main race weekend. He successfully drove the required distance to earn his FIA Super Licence, which is the special license needed to compete in Formula One.

For the 2007 season, Red Bull signed him as a full-time test driver. However, his racing season in GP2 was cut short by an injury. He later filled a vacant seat in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

Sports Car Racing

After his single-seater career, Ammermüller moved into sports car racing, where he found his greatest success.

A1 Grand Prix

From 2007 to 2009, Ammermüller represented his country in the A1 Grand Prix series. This was a unique competition where drivers raced for their nations instead of for a specific team.

During a race in Malaysia in 2007, he was involved in several collisions. Because of these incidents, he was given the nickname "Hammermüller" by some fans. Despite this tough race, he showed his skill by winning his first A1 Grand Prix race just three weeks later in Zhuhai, China.

Success in Porsche Racing

In 2012, Ammermüller began competing in the Porsche Supercup, a prestigious series where all drivers use the same type of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. This series often supports Formula One races. He also competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany.

He quickly became one of the top drivers. His hard work paid off when he won the Porsche Supercup championship for the first time in 2017. He proved it wasn't a fluke by winning again in 2018 and 2019, making him a three-time champion.

In 2020, he also won the ADAC GT Masters championship, another major German sports car series.
