Michael Baur (born April 16, 1969) is a former Austrian professional footballer. He played as a defensive midfielder, a player who helps protect the defense. Michael Baur was known for his long career in Austrian football, especially with Tirol Innsbruck.
Playing for Clubs
Michael Baur started his football journey in his hometown of Innsbruck. He joined Tirol Innsbruck and played there for 12 seasons. During his time with the club, he helped them win four league titles. They also won a domestic cup, which is a big achievement.
In 1997, Michael had a short adventure playing football in Japan for Urawa Reds. After that, he also spent a season in Germany playing for Hamburger SV in the top league, the Bundesliga.
When he was 34 years old, Michael Baur signed with SV Pasching. He played there for another four seasons. Later, he moved to LASK Linz before ending his playing career.
Playing for Austria
Michael Baur also played for his country, the Austrian national team. He made his first appearance in May 1990 in a friendly match. This was against the Netherlands.
He was part of the Austrian squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. This is one of the biggest football tournaments in the world. Michael played a total of 40 matches for Austria and scored five goals. His last international game was in October 2002, also against the Netherlands.
Life as a Coach
After retiring as a player, Michael Baur started a new career as a coach. From 2012 to 2013, he coached the youth team of Red Bull Salzburg. This is a great way to help young players develop their skills.
On May 7, 2014, Michael Baur was announced as the new head coach for SV Grödig. He started this role for the 2014–15 season. He coached the team until June 2015.
