Fergus Michael Claude Bowes-Lyon (born December 31, 1928 – died August 19, 1987) was an important British nobleman. He held the title of the 17th and 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He was also a close relative of the Royal Family! His aunt was Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and he was a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.
His Family
Fergus Michael Claude Bowes-Lyon was the son of Captain Michael Claude Hamilton Bowes-Lyon and Elizabeth Margaret Cator. His grandparents were The 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck.
Marriage and Children
On April 10, 1956, Fergus married Mary Pamela McCorquodale. They had three children together:
- Michael Fergus Bowes-Lyon (born June 7, 1957 – died February 27, 2016). He later became the 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
- Lady Elizabeth Mary Cecilia Bowes-Lyon (born December 23, 1959). She married Antony Richard Leeming in 1990. Lady Elizabeth also served as a Lady-in-waiting to her cousin, Queen Elizabeth II. A Lady-in-waiting is a female assistant who helps a queen or princess with her daily duties.
- Lady Diana Evelyn Bowes-Lyon (born December 29, 1966). She married Christopher Godfrey-Faussett in 1995. She is a Patroness of the Royal Caledonian Ball, which means she helps support this special event.
Becoming an Earl
Fergus became the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne after his first cousin, The 16th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, passed away. This meant he inherited the title and responsibilities that came with it.
Later Life
Fergus Michael Claude Bowes-Lyon passed away on August 19, 1987. He was out shooting grouse (a type of bird) on the grounds of the family castle when he collapsed. He died on the way to the hospital. After his death, his son, Michael Fergus Bowes-Lyon, inherited the title and became the next Earl.
