Michael Fergus Bowes-Lyon (born June 7, 1957 – died February 27, 2016) was known as the 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He was a British politician and soldier. Many of his family and friends called him Mikey Strathmore.
Michael was also a first cousin, once removed, of Queen Elizabeth II. This means his grandmother and the Queen's mother were sisters.

Who Was Michael Bowes-Lyon?
Michael Fergus Bowes-Lyon was the only son of Michael Bowes-Lyon, the 17th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. His mother was Mary Pamela McCorquodale.
He was a grandnephew of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. This made him a close relative of the British Royal Family.
Early Life and Education
Michael went to several schools. He studied at Sunningdale School and Eton College. Later, he attended the University of Aberdeen.
He also trained at RMA Sandhurst. This is a famous place where British Army officers are trained.
His Military Career
After his training, Michael joined the British Army. He served with the Scots Guards, which is a part of the Queen's Household Division. He reached the rank of Captain.
In 1987, he became the 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. This happened after his father passed away.
His Role in Politics
As an Earl, Michael became a Member of the House of Lords. This is part of the British Parliament. He was a "Lord Temporal," meaning he held his seat because of his noble title.
From 1991 to 1994, he served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Lords. He was also the Captain of the Queen's Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard. This was an important role in the Queen's household.
His time in the House of Lords ended in 1999. This was due to a new law called the House of Lords Act 1999. This law changed how hereditary peers could sit in the House of Lords.

Michael Bowes-Lyon was married three times during his life.
In 1984, he married Isobel Charlotte Weatherall. They had three children together:

In 2012, Michael married Karen Baxter. She was with him until he passed away.
