Timothy Patrick Bowes-Lyon was an important British nobleman. He was known as the 16th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He lived from 1918 to 1972.
He was the second son of the 15th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. His aunt was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who later became Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. She was married to King George VI. This made Timothy a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.
Becoming an Earl
Timothy's older brother sadly passed away in 1941 during World War II. After this, Timothy was known by the special title of Lord Glamis.
On May 25, 1949, Timothy took over his father's title. He became the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. This means he inherited his father's position and responsibilities.
Family Life
Timothy married Mary Bridget Brennan, an Irish nurse. She was not from a noble family. They got married at Glamis Castle on June 18, 1958. Mary passed away before Timothy, in 1967.
They had one daughter named Lady Caroline Frances Bowes-Lyon. She was born on December 8, 1959. Sadly, she passed away very young, on January 1, 1960. She was less than one month old.
Later Years and Succession
Timothy Patrick Bowes-Lyon passed away on September 13, 1972. Because he did not have a son, his title passed to his first cousin. His cousin, Michael Bowes-Lyon, became the 17th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
