Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Michael Alan Drosnin (born January 31, 1946 – died June 9, 2020) was an American journalist and writer. He became famous for his books about the Bible Code. This "code" is believed to be a set of secret messages hidden in the Hebrew text of the Torah.

Michael Drosnin was born in New York City. He went to Columbia University and graduated in 1966. After college, he worked as a journalist. He wrote for The Washington Post from 1966 to 1968. He also worked for The Wall Street Journal from 1969 to 1970.

Citizen Hughes

Michael Drosnin's first book was called Citizen Hughes: In His Own Words – How Howard Hughes Tried to Buy America. It was published in 1985. This book was a biography about a famous American businessman named Howard Hughes. Drosnin wrote it using special documents he found.

The Bible Code Series

Drosnin started looking into the Bible Code in 1992. He met a mathematician named Eliyahu Rips in Israel. Drosnin was very interested in an article published in 1994. This article was about "Equidistant Letter Sequences" found in the Book of Genesis.

In 1997, Drosnin published his book The Bible Code. In this book, he said that the Bible Code could predict the future. He also believed that our actions could change future events. The book claimed that many famous events, like assassinations, were hidden in the Bible. He said a computer program could help find these messages. Drosnin also wrote that the code predicted big events between 1998 and 2006.

He later wrote two more books about the Bible Code. The second book was Bible Code II:The Countdown, published in 2003. His third book, Bible Code III: Saving the World, came out in 2010. These three books form a series.

Criticisms of the Code

Some people disagreed with Drosnin's ideas. They believed the Bible Code was real but could not predict the future. Some critics said Drosnin made mistakes. They claimed he said scientists supported him more than they did. They also said he sometimes changed Hebrew words to make his points stronger. Critics also pointed out that he didn't prove other books didn't have similar codes.

Drosnin once challenged critics to find a code like the Bible Code in the famous novel Moby-Dick. A mathematician named Brendan McKay later found hidden messages in Moby-Dick. These messages seemed to predict the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. Drosnin said this research was "nonsense." He insisted that the codes in the Bible were "truth" and real predictions.

Film Rights for The Bible Code

In May 1997, Warner Bros. Pictures bought the rights to make a movie based on The Bible Code. Studio leaders said the book explored big questions. These questions were about our purpose on Earth and the meaning of the Bible.

Drosnin worked with a filmmaker named Ruth Rachel Anderson-Avraham. Together, they wrote a movie script called "Code" in 1998. The story in the script was set in New York City and Jerusalem. It included a plot line about a past attack and future events.

However, Warner Bros. Pictures never made the movie. The rights eventually went back to Drosnin. In 2010, another company, Relativity Media, bought the film rights. They hoped to make a movie by 2012. But this project also did not happen.

Death

Michael Drosnin passed away on June 9, 2020. He was 74 years old.
