Mikael Nyqvist was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on November 8, 1960. His mother was Swedish, and his father was Italian. Mikael was adopted from an orphanage when he was a young child.
When he was 17, Mikael spent a year as an exchange student in Omaha, Nebraska, in the United States. This is where he took his first acting class. He even had a small part in his school's play, Death of a Salesman. After returning to Sweden, he tried ballet school for a year. Later, at age 24, he decided to try acting and was accepted into the Malmö Theatre Academy.
