Michael Oldisworth (born 1591, died 1664) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, for many years between 1624 and 1653. He strongly supported the Parliamentary side during the English Civil War.

Who Was Michael Oldisworth?

Michael Oldisworth was an important figure in English politics during a very turbulent time. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for nearly 30 years. This means he was chosen by people to represent them in the House of Commons, helping to make laws and decisions for the country. He is best known for supporting Parliament against King Charles I during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Education

Michael Oldisworth was the son of Arnold Oldsworth and Lucy Barty. He went to Magdalen College, Oxford, which is a famous university. After his studies, he became a secretary to two powerful noblemen: the 3rd Earl of Pembroke and later his brother, the 4th Earl of Pembroke. These Earls were very influential, and their support helped Oldisworth begin his career in politics.

Starting His Political Career

Thanks to his connection with the Earls of Pembroke, Michael Oldisworth entered Parliament. Being an MP meant he had a voice in how England was governed.

Representing Old Sarum

In 1624, Oldisworth became the Member of Parliament for a place called Old Sarum. He was re-elected for Old Sarum in 1625, 1626, and 1628. He continued to serve until 1629. At that time, King Charles I decided to rule England without Parliament for eleven years, which was a very unusual and controversial decision.

The Short and Long Parliaments

When Parliament was finally called back, Oldisworth was elected again. In April 1640, he became an MP for Salisbury in what was known as the Short Parliament. Later that year, in November 1640, he was elected for both Salisbury and Plympton Erle. He chose to represent Salisbury.

Supporting Parliament During the Civil War

Oldisworth's patron, the Earl of Pembroke, was a Puritan, a type of Protestant who wanted to change the Church of England. The Earl had disagreements with King Charles I. Because of this, Michael Oldisworth continued to strongly support the Parliamentarian side. This side was also known as the Roundheads during the English Civil War.

In 1650, Oldisworth was given an important job: he became the keeper of Windsor Great Park. He also held another position called master of the prerogative office. During these times, people who supported the King (Royalists) sometimes made fun of him in writings, but others, like the poet Robert Herrick, praised him.

Later Life and Family

Michael Oldisworth married Jane Thomas. She was the widow of William Thomas and the daughter of Sir John Stradling, 1st Baronet. He passed away in 1664.
