Michael Phillips (born March 11, 1961) is an American film critic. He writes about movies for the Chicago Tribune newspaper.
Early Life and Beginnings
Michael Phillips was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He spent most of his childhood growing up in Racine.
Career as a Critic
Before becoming the main film critic for the Chicago Tribune, Michael Phillips was a drama critic. He wrote about plays for several newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Dallas Times Herald.
From 2006 to 2008, he often appeared on the TV show At the Movies with Ebert & Roeper. He started as a guest critic, filling in for Roger Ebert when he was sick. Later, he became a co-host with Richard Roeper. In 2009, Michael Phillips and New York Times critic A. O. Scott became the new hosts of the show. However, the show ended in August 2010 after one season.
More recently, Michael Phillips has been a guest host on Turner Classic Movies. He has introduced films on the channel in 2011, 2013, 2016, and early 2017. He also talks about movies on the Filmspotting podcast. Plus, he hosts a radio show called The Film Score on WFMT-FM, where he discusses movie music.
