Michel Aco: A French Explorer's Journey

Michel Aco became a trusted leader, or lieutenant, for La Salle. This was because he knew many Native American languages and was very skilled at exploring new lands. His knowledge helped the group communicate and travel safely.

Exploring New Rivers

When the exploration party reached the Illinois River, Aco, Hennepin, and another man were sent on a special mission. Their task was to explore the upper part of the Mississippi River. This was a very important journey into unknown territory.

Discoveries and Challenges

During their journey, Michel Aco and his companions made exciting discoveries. They were the first Europeans to see Carver's Cave, a famous cave, and the powerful Saint Anthony Falls. These natural wonders were amazing sights. However, their journey also had challenges. They were captured by Sioux Indians. Luckily, a man named Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut used his influence to help them. He managed to get them released from captivity.

Further Journeys and New Lands

After being freed, Michel Aco was brought to the mouth of the Wisconsin River. From there, he continued his explorations. He traveled along the Wisconsin River and then the Fox River. This led him all the way down to Green Bay, Wisconsin. His travels also took him to Mackinac Island, Michigan. Finally, in 1681, he reached Montreal. These journeys covered huge distances and helped map out new areas.

Life After Exploring

After his exciting days as an explorer, Michel Aco decided to settle down. He made his home in Illinois. There, he started a new life as a trader. He traded goods and built connections in the community. In 1693, he married Aramepinchieue, who was the daughter of a Kaskaskia chief. They had two children together.
