Michelangelo 'Michael' Spensieri (January 2, 1949 – May 6, 2013) was an Italian-Canadian politician and lawyer. He lived in Ontario, Canada. Michael Spensieri served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. He was part of the Ontario Liberal Party from 1981 to 1985.
Early Life and Education
Michael Spensieri was born in Molise, Italy, on January 2, 1949. When he was 13 years old, he moved to Canada. His family came from a town called Vinchiaturo, near Campobasso.
He went to the University of Toronto to study law. He earned his first law degree there in 1972. Later, he continued his studies at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. In 1992, he earned another law degree. He specialized in international business and trade laws. After finishing his education, he worked as a lawyer in Toronto.
Political Career
Michael Spensieri was interested in politics. He first tried to become a member of the Ontario legislature in 1975. He ran in the Downsview area. However, he lost that election by a very small number of votes.
In the 1981 election, he tried again. This time, he ran in the Yorkview area. He won the election and became a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP). He defeated the candidate from the New Democratic Party.
During his time in the legislature, he supported David Peterson for the leader of the Liberal Party in 1982. Michael Spensieri served one term as an MPP. He did not run for re-election in 1985. Later, he tried to become a Liberal candidate again in 1987, but he was not chosen.
After Politics
After leaving politics, Michael Spensieri went back to working as a lawyer. He later focused on helping people with mental health issues. He worked to raise money and support for causes related to mental health and bipolar disorders.
Michael Spensieri passed away on May 6, 2013, at the age of 64.
