Michelle Alonso Morales (born on March 29, 1994, in Tenerife) is an amazing swimmer from Spain. People often call her "The Little Mermaid of the Canary Islands" because of her incredible talent. She is seen as one of the most important sports stars in Spain.

About Michelle

Michelle was born in 1994 and has an intellectual disability. She grew up in the Canary Islands and lives in Tenerife. In October 2013, she received a very special award. It was the gold Real Orden al Mérito Deportivo, which means "Royal Order of Sports Merit." This award recognized her great achievements in sports.

Her Swimming Career

Michelle is an S14 classified swimmer. This means she competes in a category for athletes with intellectual disabilities. She is part of the Spanish Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (FEddi).

Early Competitions

In 2010, Michelle competed in the Tenerife International Open. She also took part in the Paralympic Swimming Championship of Spain by Autonomous Communities in 2012. These events helped her prepare for bigger stages.

Paralympic Success

Michelle has won three gold medals at the Paralympic Games.

  • At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, England, she won a gold medal. She set a new world record in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:16.85.
  • She won another gold medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.
  • At the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, she won her third gold medal. She broke her own world record again with a time of 1:12:02.

During the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Michelle had the honor of carrying the flag of Spain. She led the Spanish team during the opening ceremony.

World and European Championships

Michelle has also achieved great success in other major competitions:

  • In 2013, she won a gold medal at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal. This was for her favorite event, the 100m breaststroke.
  • She won another gold medal at the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira.
  • In 2014, she competed at the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven. She won gold in the 100m breaststroke S14, breaking her own world record again.
  • At the 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships in Funchal, she won another gold in the 100m breaststroke. She also earned a bronze medal in the 200m freestyle.
