Michelle's Early Sporting Life
Before Michelle became a triathlete, she was a runner. She even represented Australia in running at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. This early experience in running helped her later in her triathlon career.
Competing in the Olympics
Michelle Dillon competed in the Olympics twice for Great Britain.
Sydney 2000 Olympics
Her first Olympic triathlon was at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She was one of three British athletes there. Unfortunately, she was not able to finish the race. This is sometimes called "DNF," which means "Did Not Finish."
Athens 2004 Olympics
Four years later, Michelle competed again at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. This time, she had a fantastic race! She finished in sixth place, which is a great achievement at the Olympics. Her finish time was 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 0.77 seconds.
World Championship Success
Michelle also achieved great success in World Championship events.
Duathlon World Champion
In 2005, she won a gold medal at the ITU Duathlon World Championships in Newcastle, Australia. A duathlon is like a triathlon but without the swimming part; it involves running and cycling. She also won a silver medal at the Duathlon World Championships in Győr, Hungary, in 2007.
Triathlon World Medals
Michelle earned a bronze medal at the ITU Triathlon World Championships in Cancún, Mexico, in 2002. This showed her skill in all three parts of the triathlon: swimming, cycling, and running.
Return to Competition and Coaching
After retiring from professional triathlon, Michelle became a coach. She has helped many other triathletes, including Stuart Hayes and Emma Pallant, improve their skills.
Later World Titles
Michelle returned to competitive sport in 2016, showing she still had a passion for racing. She came second in the British Duathlon Championships that year. Later, she continued to win world titles in her age group:
- In 2018, she became the 45-49F World Triathlon Champion on the Gold Coast, Australia.
- She won this title again in 2019 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
- In 2023, she became the 50-54F WT World Triathlon Champion in Hamburg, Germany.
- She won this title again in 2024 in Torremolinos, Spain.
