The Michelson Museum of Art is a special place in Marshall, Texas. It was created to keep and show the many artworks of an artist named Leo Michelson. He was from Latvia but also lived in the United States.

About the Michelson Museum of Art

Leo Michelson had a lot of art. He worried that if he gave it to a very big museum, much of it might just stay hidden in storage. He wanted his art to be seen by people.

After Leo Michelson passed away in 1978, his wife, Janine, looked for a good home for his art. A family friend, Wendy Russell Reves, suggested Marshall, Texas. This was a special place because Mrs. Reves was born there.

What You Can See at the Museum

The museum has a main collection of Leo Michelson's art. This includes more than a thousand of his paintings, drawings, and prints. It's a great way to see how his style changed over time.

Over the years, the museum's collection has grown. It now includes art by other artists too. In 1999, the museum received a large collection of American art from the 20th century. This gift came from Dr. Bernard and Gloria Kronenberg.

This collection features paintings, drawings, lithographs, and statues. These works are by 53 different artists, including famous names like Milton Avery and Georges Rouault.

Another interesting part of the museum is the Ramona and Jay Ward Collection. This collection has many unique African masks. These masks come from different groups of people in West Africa, like the Yoruba and Senufo.
