How Miches Got Its Name
Before 1936, Miches was called El Jovero. That year, its name was changed. It was renamed to honor a brave general. His name was Eugenio Miches, and he was from the Dominican Republic. He had French family roots.
What People Do in Miches
Miches has always been a quiet, country area. It is one of the least crowded places in the Dominican Republic. Most people here work in farming. They grow crops like rice, coconuts, and cocoa. They also grow root vegetables such as yautía and ñame.
Raising cattle is another important activity. Many people also do artisanal fishing, catching fish by hand. Local crafts and small shops are also part of the economy.
For a long time, Miches was quite isolated. This was because of the sea to the north and mountains to the south. But in recent years, roads have gotten better. Now, it's easier to travel to places like Punta Cana, Santa Cruz de El Seibo, and Sabana de la Mar. These new roads are helping Miches grow. They are also bringing more visitors and new types of jobs.
Tourism and Fun in Miches
Miches has a lot of potential for tourism. It has long beaches and unique coastlines. The area is full of natural beauty. You can find mangroves, tall coconut trees, and mountains. There are also rivers, waterfalls, and cool caves. Tropical forests add to the amazing scenery.
New roads and big projects are helping tourism grow. This has led to many small local businesses. You can find restaurants and places to rent cabins. There are also boat tours and horseback rides on the beach. New groups are working together to boost tourism in Miches.
One big project is called Tropicalia. It is a large tourism and real estate development. It is being built by Cisneros Real Estate. This project will invest a lot of money in Miches. It is also expected to create about 1,800 jobs. Since 2008, the Tropicalia Foundation has been helping Miches. They work to make the area better for everyone. They focus on the environment, education, and local businesses.
