Santa Cruz del Seibo, often called El Seibo, is a city and a special area (municipality) in the El Seibo Province of the Dominican Republic. You can find it in the eastern part of this Caribbean country.

History of El Seibo

El Seibo is one of the oldest towns in the Dominican Republic. It officially became a municipality on November 6, 1844. However, it had been an important area since the time when Spain ruled the land.

Spanish explorer Juan de Esquivel founded the town in 1502. The name "Seibo" comes from a powerful chief of the Taíno people. The Taíno were the native people who lived there before the Europeans arrived.

The full name, Santa Cruz del Seibo, comes from an old Spanish tradition. People would place a "Holy Cross" (Cruz de Cristo) in different directions to protect against bad things. A cross called "Asomante" still stands in the western part of El Seibo city today.
