Early Life and School
Mickey Factz grew up surrounded by music. His father often rapped to him, which inspired him to start writing his own rhymes. He would watch music videos and study how his favorite artists performed.
He went to Adlai E. Stevenson High School, the same school that the famous hip hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa attended. After high school, Factz attended New York University School of Law. However, he decided to leave his studies to follow his dream of making music.
Music Career
Mickey Factz has created many musical projects, including mixtapes and albums. A mixtape is a collection of songs, often released for free to show an artist's skill.
First Mixtapes
In 2006, Factz released a mixtape where he performed freestyles over instrumentals from the group N.E.R.D. A freestyle is a rap that is often made up on the spot, and an instrumental is the music of a song without the words. His work was so good that it got the attention of Pharrell, a member of N.E.R.D.
The next year, he released Flashback Vol.1: Back to the Future. This project was a tribute to the music he loved while growing up. He recorded about 40 songs for it, showing his dedication to his craft.
Gaining Fame
In 2008, Factz started a unique project called The Leak, Vol.1: The Understanding. For 17 weeks, he released one new song every week on the social media site MySpace.
One of these songs, "I'm Sean (50 Shots More)," was very powerful. It was written from the point of view of Sean Bell, a young man who was tragically killed in New York in 2006. Factz said he wanted the song to encourage young people to come together and make things better.
His weekly song releases continued with The Leak, Vol.2: The Inspiration. This mixtape included guest artists like Drake and Travie McCoy. His music video for the song "Rockin' N Rollin'" was even played on MTV. Because of his success, XXL magazine named him one of the top new rappers in its "Freshmen Class of '09."
Signing a Record Deal
In 2010, Factz's song "Rocker" was featured in the popular video game Fight Night Round 4. That same year, he signed a contract with Battery Records, a major music label.
Around this time, the famous rapper Lupe Fiasco announced that Mickey Factz was a new member of the All City Chess Club, a group of talented rappers. Factz also released an album called Love...Lost in 2011, which was inspired by a past relationship.
Creative Projects
In 2012, Factz wanted to release a very artistic project called Mickey MauSe. His record label thought it was too experimental, so Factz released it on his own.
In the album, he created a character named Mickey Mause, a graffiti artist from the 1980s. The project was about what it means to be a true artist. It is known as one of his best works and helped him become closer with Lupe Fiasco.
Other Activities
Besides music, Mickey Factz has been involved in other interesting projects.
Television
In 2008, he appeared in a television commercial for the Honda Accord car, acting as a spokesperson.
Battle Rap
Factz is also a skilled competitor in battle rap. Battle rap is a type of rapping where two artists compete by improvising clever and witty lyrics against each other. He has competed in events for major leagues like KOTD (King of the Dot).
