Mid Dome is a tall mountain in New Zealand. It is located in the northern Southland area on the South Island. This mountain stands high above the small town of Five Rivers and the Waimea Plain. It reaches a height of 1,478 metres (4,849 ft). Farms around the base of the mountain were once part of a large property called Dome station. Mid Dome is also found near the upper parts of the Mataura River, about 7 kilometers south of the town of Athol.

Mid Dome: A Mountain's Story

Fighting Land Erosion

In the late 1960s, Mid Dome became a special outdoor laboratory. Scientists wanted to find a way to stop land erosion. Erosion happens when soil and rock are worn away, often by wind or water. This can cause problems for farms and the environment.

To help reduce erosion on Mid Dome, people decided to plant wilding pines. These are types of pine trees that grow quickly. The idea was that the trees' roots would hold the soil in place.

The Pines Spread Too Far

The plan worked well at first. The wilding pines grew quickly and helped to stop the erosion on the western side of the mountain. However, by the early 1990s, a new problem appeared. The pines started to spread too much. They were growing beyond the areas where they were wanted.

Since then, people have been working hard to control the spread of these trees. One way they do this is by spraying the pines from the air. This method has successfully reduced the amount of land covered by the unwanted trees. It shows how sometimes a solution to one problem can create another.
