Midden-Drenthe is a municipality located in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. A municipality is like a local government area. It was formed in 1998 when three smaller municipalities, Beilen, Smilde, and Westerbork, joined together. For a short time, from 1998 to 2000, it was known as Middenveld.

Historical Sites and Science

Westerbork Synthese Radio Telescoop
Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope

The village of Westerbork is well-known for a significant historical site. This site is the Westerbork transit camp, located about 7 kilometers north of the village. During World War II, this camp played a role in the movement of people.

Near this historical site, you can find a very important scientific instrument. The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) was built here in 1969. This large array of telescopes helps scientists study space by listening to radio waves from distant objects.

Education

Education is important in Midden-Drenthe. As of 2023, there are many schools for young people.

  • There are 16 primary schools located throughout the municipality. These schools provide education for younger children.
  • For older students, there are two secondary schools. Both of these schools are in the town of Beilen.
