Where is the Middle River?

The Omineca Country

The Omineca Country is a large geographic area in British Columbia. It is known for its natural beauty and rich history, especially concerning Indigenous peoples and early explorers. The Middle River flows right through the heart of this region.

Salmon and the River

The Middle River is a vital part of a long journey for salmon. These fish travel thousands of kilometers from the ocean to lay their eggs in freshwater.

The Salmon Run

Each year, many salmon swim up the Fraser River, which is one of Canada's longest rivers. From the Fraser, they enter the Nechako River and then the Stuart River. Their final destination is Takla Lake, which means they must pass through the Middle River. This incredible journey is called a "salmon run." It is very important for the environment and for the animals that rely on salmon for food.

People and Communities

The Middle River area has been home to Indigenous peoples for a very long time. Today, communities and reserves are located along its banks.

Local Communities

The community of Middle River is situated near the river. This community includes the Dzitline Lee Indian Reserve 9. Another important Indigenous community, O K'Ay Wha Cho 26, is located on the west side of the river. These communities have deep historical and cultural ties to the land and the river.

The Railway Connection

An old railway project, called the Dease Lake Extension of the British Columbia Railway, was planned to run along the left (north) bank of the Middle River. While this railway was never fully completed, its route shows the historical importance of the river valley as a transportation corridor.
