The Story of Middlemore's Name
The area known as Middlemore was once called Kohuora. In the 1840s, a farmer named William Thorne Buckland started farming here. His younger brother, Alfred Buckland, joined him in 1850.
The name 'Middlemore' comes from a house that belonged to Richard Fairburn. He was the son of an Anglican missionary named William Thomas Fairburn. This old house is now part of the Auckland Golf Club's clubhouse.
Middlemore is also built on an important historical site. It was once part of the Waokauri / Pūkaki portage. This was a path where Māori people could carry their canoes overland. It connected the Waitematā and Manukau harbors, making travel across the land easier.
